ALINA SERBAN

 

Alina Serban is an actress born into a Roma family in Romania. She is also Romania’s first female Roma director and playwright. She is a graduate of the Bucharest University for theatrical art and cinematography (UNATC), and obtained her master in Theatre Lab at RADA. Alina also trained at the Tisch School of the Arts (NYU), and became widely known through her one-woman show, I DECLARE AT MY OWN RISK, based on her experiences growing up in a traditional impoverished Roma community. The play was performed internationally in Romania, Britain, France, Italy, and Hungary. On screen, Alina played the key role of 'Nadir' opposite Benedict Cumberbatch in the TV series THE LAST ENEMY. Recent work includes: the lead role of 'Pamela' in the critically acclaimed feature film ALONE AT MY WEDDING, by writer-director Marta Bergman - which premiered at Cannes; the role of 'Ali' in the sporting drama feature GIPSY QUEEN; the BBC drama DOING MONEY, by Gwyneth Hughes; the role of ‘Diah’ in the 9-part drama GANGS OF LONDON for Sky Atlantic, which was directed by Gareth Evans; and as ‘Chivuta’ in BAD LUCK BANDING OR LOONY PORN. Directed by Radu Jude, the film won the Golden Bear award at Berlin Film Festival.
