WELKET BUNGUÉ

 

Balanta and Portuguese-Guinean, Welket Bungué, was born in Xitole in Guinea-Bissau. He began his artistic training in 2005, and holds a degree in theatre from the Actors branch in Lisbon, and a postgraduate degree in performance from UniRio. In 2012, Welket was awarded a Best Actor Award from Festival de Cinema Quinta Praia for his performance in the short film MÜTTER. Other previous work includes: BASTIEN; JOAQUIM by Marcelo Gomes; BODY ELECTRIC by Marcelo Caetano; KAMINEY by Vishaal Bahardwaj; and LETTERS FROM WAR by Ivo M. Ferreira. Welket has been a member of the Portuguese Academy of Cinema since 2015, and also of the Deutsche Filmakademie since 2020. He played the leading role of 'Francis' in BERLIN ALEXANDERPLATZ, directed by Burhan Qurbani, which led to a nomination as “Best Male Lead” at the LOLA awards of the German Film Academy (Deutscher Filmpreis). He appeared in the feature film PEDRO by writer/director Laís Bodanzky. Since 2016 he has been working regularly with the Mala Voadora theatre company in Portugal, and the theatre companies Rastilho (Lisbon), and Homlet (Beja), where he is also co-founder. Welket can currently be seen in David Cronenberg’s feature film CRIMES OF THE FUTURE opposite Kristen Stewart & Viggo Mortensen, and in the thriller series THEN YOU RUN for Sky.
